One of the things that I am known for is my ability to clean and organize anything and everything. Actually, my family has coined a term for my ability known as “Morganization” which basically refers to my keen sense of organizing everything. I maintain that I can pretty much give a methodical order to any system that needs organized and this was challenged when I first started working at the paint factory. My first day on the job, my boss took me to an older part of the factory where there were well over 5,000 files scattered all over the floor. My first assignment was to organize these files so that they were easy to find and out of the way. Luckily, I had some bankers boxes and an army of filing cabinets to assist me in my challenge and in the end– two months later– it was done.
Beyond Morganization, I am also pretty good at cleaning up messes and this is why my family will call me when they have a big clean up project (99.9% of the time I will help them out, too). Granted, it may not be a really special talent to be able to clean up a space, but there are a lot of people in this world that are not as confident in their cleaning skills or they simply don’t like to do it. There are a lot of other things I’d rather be doing than cleaning my house on a Sunday morning (relaxing on a beach somewhere, for example), but I feel better when my house looks better and I’ve found that having the right attitude will definitely improve your cleaning skills and having a clean house will improve your attitude, it goes hand-in-hand.
Having a clean house is important for more than just the obvious hygienic reasons; it also promotes stability and comfort in your household by knowing where everything is and also on the visual aspect of looking around at your clean house. It will improve your mood because you won’t always be thinking negatively about cleaning your house if it’s already clean, not to mention the great look and smell of a clean house. On a psychological note, keeping a clean house is a reflection of you and shows that you take pride in your personal belongings. Your guests will feel much more comfortable in a house that is clean and smelling great compared to one that is a hot mess and smells a little funky. It seems almost obvious to keep your house clean, but I can relate with anyone that feels like there just isn’t any time to set aside in your schedule to deep clean your house. I’ve come up with five tips that may help you as you take on the obstacle of picking up your house, or who knows…they may even inspire you to get up and dust!
Certain ways of thinking have such a powerful impact on your attitude and your willingness to complete different tasks; you get excited about things that you like to do and this allows you to enjoy it. On the same note, if you go into something telling yourself that you’re not going to have fun and that you hate doing it, your mind will more than likely play up to these preconceived notions. Don’t look at cleaning like it’s a chore that you hate doing; try looking at it like a goal to accomplish. You can even make it a personal goal, “I will try to keep my house clean” if it helps.
As the saying goes, “every situation in life is what you make of it” and this applies to cleaning. Think about the aspects of cleaning that you don’t like and try to alter these things so that they are better for you. An example of this being that when I clean my house I turn up some music, open the windows, and sing along to my favorites! I sometimes will even use my designated cleaning time to listen to a new CD in an attempt to find new music (which seems like a constant quest in my life).
A lot of people dislike cleaning due to certain jobs that they dread doing; perfect examples of this being cleaning the shower and scrubbing the toilets. The best advice that I can give for this is to search around for items that make these jobs easier! Scrubbing Bubbles has an automatic shower cleaner that you hang over your shower head and use daily; it will make your life a whole lot easier by significantly cutting down on that job if not eliminating it all together. You can also look into those little capsules that make your toilet water blue if it is scrubbing toilets that you dislike (which I don’t know anyone that actually likes doing that). One thing that I hate doing is cleaning my glass stove top, but I recently started using the Scotch-Brite Cook Top Cleaner and it is wonderful and gets the job done! You can also look into finding cleaning supplies in a pleasant scent that you like if you are one of those people that hate the smell of bleach or Murphy’s Oil. There are so many different products out there, you just have to experiment to find the ones you like.
For some people, having a cleaning spree at the end of the week works because it allots a certain amount of time in their busy schedule to tidy up the house. For others, this is not the case because it allows a whole week to dread that Cleaning Day and these individuals will hate every second of it because there’s a lot to be done on that one day. My advice for any cleaning schedule is to try and clean up during the week, regardless if you have a designated day or not. Doing little things like picking up and putting these away will cut down on the work load, and I’ve found that staying on top of the laundry and dishes helps immensely. Setting a schedule for cleaning is especially useful if you are cleaning for a large household because it lets everyone know that on this day, you are all going to pitch in and clean up. My mom used to set aside Sunday as our household cleaning day and I quickly learned that if I just kept my room clean during the week, I would have more time to do the things I wanted to do while my siblings were stuck cleaning their rooms! Setting some sort of schedule should help you as you stay on target of your goal to keep your house clean!
After all of the cleaning is done, pour a glass of wine, sit back, and enjoy your clean house. Cleaning your entire house is quite an accomplishment and if you’ve deep cleaned your house, just think that you won’t have to do that again for another week or two! I personally love the smell of a clean house and I’ve never met anyone who hates it (I’m sure having typed that someone will prove me wrong), so take it all in and just relax.
While on the topic of cleaning, I will take the opportunity to share with you my favorite brand of cleaning supplies and that is Method. Their products are environmentally safe, effective, smell great, and even the packaging is really cute and made out of recyclable materials. You can find Method products in many stores (I know Target carries them for sure) or buy their products online. We use the wood cleaner, “Wood for Good”, which has a really pleasant almond scent and we also use the stainless steel cleaner which leaves our appliances looking fantastic.
If you are putting off the big project of cleaning your house, try and change your perspective on it and look at it as a goal to accomplish and not a chore to complete. If you’ve set a personal goal to keep your house clean, I hope that you conquer it with flying colors! If you have any other suggestions on how to make cleaning up a little easier, share them with us!
Here’s to putting an end to dreading the cleaning process and eventually embracing your sparkling house!
